Bastard Nation: Dignity and Equal Rights for Adult Adoptees (Adoption Reform)

Bastard Nation advocates for the civil and human rights of adult citizens who were adopted as children. Millions of North Americans are prohibited by law from accessing personal records that pertain to their historical, genetic and legal identities. Such records are held by their governments in secret and without accountability, due solely to the fact that they were adopted. "Bastard Nation's "agenda" is simple: the full human and civil rights of adult adoptees. In terms of records access, Bastard Nation does not believe that the government should hold what amounts to secret and sealed dossiers on its law-abiding, adopted citizens. Bastard Nation does not believe that social workers, bureaucrats or third-party agents should act as gatekeepers for our vital records. As agendas go, ours speaks to our fundamental right to self-determination as individuals and citizens.

Green Ribbon Campaign for Open Adoption Records

According to the psychological literature, it’s perfectly natural that 90 percent of adoptees want identifying information about their biological parents. (AAC, 1996) The Maine Department of Human Resources Task Force on Adoption found in 1989 that every birth parent surveyed wanted to be found by the child/adult they had placed for adoption and that 98 percent of the adoptive parents surveyed supported reunions between their adopted child and members of the adoptee’s birth family. (CWLA, 1998). With adoptees, birth parents and adoptive parents all in such overwhelming accord, what’s the problem? Why are records sealed? Who can possibly benefit from a system that completely ignores the preferences of those most intimately involved in adoption.
