Many people think of bamboo as being related to a hot climate, but those that we have selected originate from the temperate regions of China, Japan and the higher elevations of the Himalyas. They can withstand the climatic conditions of the Scottish gardens (and therefore any where in the UK) and are indeed hardy and evergreen down to temperatures of -18 to -30 degrees Centigrade, depending on the variety. Exotic looking bamboo's make a stunning addition to any size or style of garden, patio, balcony or pondside. The diversity of bamboo is enormous, for example, leaf size can, or may be long and broad, like palm leaves. They can be variegated. The colour of the canes may vary significantly from gold,green,black,s striped or mottled. They can grow to 18 feet (6 metres) or more, or may only grow to 8 inches (20 cm) tall. The Scottish Bamboo Nursery is owned by Anne and John Lenting and is associated with a large bamboo nursery in Holland. We have an interesting selection of more than 100 species and access to many more.

We started the Ozark Bamboo Garden in Northwest Arkansas as an excuse to grow as much bamboo as we had space for. Out of a collection of about 103 varieties, we are propagating about 50 species, 40 of which are now in trial plantings around our nursery. We like having bamboo all over the yard and are always seeing something new in this beautiful and diverse family. We were fortunate to find additional land to grow more bamboo. On our new land, we built another greenhouse and new garden center and called it Bear Creek Nursery.
