Where Love Begins: Emerald Meditations

You have probably heard Ireland referred to as the Emerald Isle. However, it is also described as having the forty shades of green. This is more accurate. The shade of green I noticed on my first trip was more like the cheerful chartreuse hue of peridot. Not until I went to the northwest part of the country (where it rains more) did I experience the energy of the emerald ray.

The breathtaking sight vibrated the kind of healing that goes deep into the spirit. I remembered why emerald is one of my favorite crystals and why more kinds of physical healing have been ascribed to the emerald than to almost any other stone.

The Emerald Prescription

During the third century A.D. emerald was believed to lessen eyestrain, and many gem engravers kept it on their worktable. Various cultures attributed to it the ability to heal a range of digestive troubles.

Emerald was also widely believed to offer its wearer supernatural protection. Hindu physicians claimed that it destroyed demoniacal influences; while others believed that it protected one from the attacks of venomous creatures and evil spirits.

I make no such claims, but emerald does seem to have the gift of banishing emotional venom and the unfriendly spirits that dwell within us.

Love’s Confusion

To understand the gifts of emerald, it’s important to write about some common misunderstandings about love.

Many people who talk about its lack in their lives (“I don’t have a lover;” “My children don’t love me;” “No one likes me”) are speaking about what they aren’t receiving.

Sometimes they talk about love as a transaction (“I give. Why don’t I get?”). If you think about that, it has a stop-and-start quality. I give, pause, I get-or I don’t get.

To speak of love as a one-way or a two-way street indicates an interruption or blockage of energy. Energy’s natural pattern is to flow, not to stop for red lights or wait for a transaction to be recorded. Love is energy, and though it is romantically connected to the heart, it is spiritually connected to the soul. So is the energy of emerald.

The heart, however, is the area where love’s energy often gets blocked. Traditionally in chakra balancing, the pink stones (most commonly kunzite, rose quartz, rhodonite, and pink tourmaline) are placed on this area for issues like lack of love during childhood years, sexual or emotional abuse, the reluctance to love because of previous betrayals, sacrificing one’s best interests in favor of those loved, and other conditions that have caused blockage or imbalance in this area.

It is certainly vital to clear these issues, and it may take much patience and willingness for pain to temporarily arise in order that the clearing occurs. I believe, though, that to address difficulties on the heart level alone, however, creates a closed circle. The issues focus on “Me/You,” whether the “You” represents the people who failed to give love in earlier years (or now) or the people from whom one wants love in the present.

This circle opens when we reach for a greater source of love. One way of saying this would be that the relationship we seek is one of “Me/Thou.” In this case, “Thou” represents one’s greater self, a self connected to an infinite source of love.

Love’s Source

This is the energy of emerald. When we are addressing the hurts of the past, we can feel smaller than our pain. Working with emerald reminds us that we are much more than that suffering. Emerald doesn’t specifically relate to interpersonal love relationships. By helping to open our connection to Spirit, it infuses us with nonphysical energy so that our ability to love and forgive becomes much more powerful than our experience of injury and loss. Because the spiritual source of love is unlimited, we are constantly replenished when we make that connection.

Emerald Meditations

You can practice this meditation in one of two ways. The first involves an emerald and a quartz crystal of any size. (Note: it is not at all necessary to have a gem-quality emerald. Tumbled emeralds are available at very reasonable prices.)

Hold the emerald in one hand and the quartz in the other. You can be either sitting up or lying down for this meditation.

The second meditation uses more stones, and you will want to be lying down.

Crystal Layout

All of the crystals listed below are relevant to the chakra indicated. I am listing my favorites, but these are only recommendations.

At the base of the feet (first chakra): smoky quartz or hematite

Pelvic area (second chakra): red jasper or carnelian

Navel area (third chakra): tiger’s eye

Solar plexus (diaphragm): rhodochrosite. This stone assists in deep breathing.

Heart (fourth chakra): rose quartz

Throat (fifth chakra): aquamarine

Third eye (sixth chakra): charoite

Crown of head (seventh chakra): clear quartz

Statements About Love

You may want to prepare for this meditation by writing a series of statements. Here are some examples:

Even though when I was little, I didn’t get enough love from my mother, I recognize that she, too, didn’t experience much love in her life.

Even though I wanted more love, I choose not to let a lack from the past prevent me from giving myself love now.

Even though I’ve looked to others to give me love, I realize that I can choose to be the source of love.

I recommend keeping each meditation to a few statements and one relationship. As you repeat the statements to yourself, be sure to breathe fully and deeply. Be aware of the emotions that pass through you. Allow them their full expression.

Allow a pause between each statement. Listen to the thoughts that go through your mind. If particular memories arise, make note of them.

After each meditation, you may want to record your emotions and memories. I strongly recommend keeping a journal as you go through this process. Just write down whatever occurs to you without judgment or censorship. After a week, two weeks, or whatever works for you, you may want to reread these entries.

Also keep track of any insights and changes you notice in your relationships with others.

You may have heard this: Love Conquers All. I believe it’s more true to say that love dissolves anything that isn’t love. This is the energy of emerald.

It Takes a Pillage and a Spillage to Wake the Village and Stop the Drillage

June 21, 2010 by

by Brian NarelleThe whole world is shocked and saddened by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and I for one am hoping that there is some redeeming benefit in this ecological horror. Since you tend to have a positive perspective, can you find something positive to say about this disaster? Is there some way humanity can deal with this cataclysm?

It is indeed challenging to say something positive about this disaster, but here goes: I am positive this is a disaster. With all the technical fixes broken, there’s no telling how long BP will be peeing into the Gulf.

You know, it doesn’t seem to matter how alarming the alarm is, we humans tend to want to hit snooze. But it’s getting harder to snooze through the news. Take the economic meltdown — please! While Americans felt the pain, and older folks waxed nostalgic about the good old days, when people robbed banks instead of the other way around, in the end most folks watched passively as our commonwealth got pillaged by the uncommonly wealthy.

But if a pillage alone doesn’t awaken the village, then maybe a pillage AND a spillage will do it. And now that Obama has presented BP with a $20 billion invoice, maybe it takes a billage to stop the drillage.

But here is the problem. We humans are so used to fighting amongst ourselves (and that includes all of us, folks … that’s why I know that a sign that Nonjudgment Day is near is when all the peace groups make peace with one another), that we haven’t yet learned to speak in one voice to say, “Stop the pillage, the spillage and the drillage … we are poisoning our global village!”

And … more importantly … in that same unified voice, declare the One Suggestion as the new planetary operating system: “We are here to re-grow the Garden, and have a heaven of a time doing it.”

If we really want to overgrow the current system ruled by fossilized fools fueled by fossil fuels, we have to address that other spillage of crude that has polluted our body politic: The igno-rants of media motor mouths, particularly those on Fox “News” who have turned their lie-ability into an asset. If only the Evangelicals were into metaphysics … they would see that F-O-X is 6-6-6 in numerology.

However, spewing more crude back is no way to bring fear-fed red tribe “conservatives” out of their Fox holes. And that brings me to the one sure antidote to cataclysm. Dogaclysm.

For millennia our spiritual teachers have been telling us to treat one another like brothers and sisters. And we see how well that has worked. Because, let’s face it. How did we treat our brothers and sisters? We fought with them. We were jealous. We thought, “Mommy likes you better.” Or, “Mommy likes me better, so nyah nyah, nyah!”

But what happened when a new puppy came into the household? Everyone stopped fighting and began petting the puppy together. And that’s what we need today. Puppy love. Instead of treating one another like brothers and sisters, let’s begin to treat each other like lovable puppies, and begin to feel the love. Did you know that when you come in contact with a friendly dog, your body secretes healthy hormones called puptides? And no wonder. Dogs are so filled with unconditional love, it’s literally dripping over the sides of their mouths. Maybe the secret to world peace is empowering an elite corps of golden retrievers, beagles and spaniels to anoint all negotiators with their kisses before, during and after their sessions. Imagine … the Salivation Army.

And so … nature has presented us with a cataclysm, and we must respond with a dogaclysm — a tsunami wave of love so doggone powerful that the agents of pillage, spillage and drillage will have no choice but to obey the Master and sit … stay … and roll over.

Seriously, Folks … Isn’t It Time for a Department of Heartland Security?

As people watch this current ecological disaster unfold, and wonder if there is any upside to the downer, I think of what co-heart and storyteller David Lynn Grimes said at Caroline Casey’s Trickster Training Tea Party this past weekend: “The oil spill is a sentient act of Mother Earth to wake us up.”

David was on the scene 21 years ago when the Exxon-Valdez spewed its spillage on the Prince William Sound, and saw firsthand the precursor to this current curse. However awful the situation, there was an unplanned upside. “They were all set to clear-cut the Alaskan forest … and the oil spill stopped the development,” he says.

So, here is my hope and my prayer. May this disaster be the pre-blesser to a truly new world order that establishes itself as a stand for a new Humanity with the mission of re-growing the Garden. May we cohere as a species around uncommon common sense and the virtues and values the vast majority of us hold in common. May we use our polarities as a dynamo to evolve in a spiral instead of going around in circles.

Think it’s impossible to gather that kind of energy?

Consider this. In 2008, the Obama campaign raised half a billion dollars in individual contributions. What exactly did that buy us? True, we don’t have McCain-Palin ruling the roost … but considering that a victory is like going to the race track to bet a bundle and saying, “Gee, I hope I break even.”

In this world in crisis, and world of opportunity, there is no breaking even. We either break through, or we break down. Right now, we seem to be breaking down … and are ripe for a breakthrough.

And that is why I am rolling up a lifetime of experience — in political science, psychology, spirituality and of course, humor — into a mission to launch a Department of Heartland Security as a non-governmental, non-coercive non-organization to activate the heart and soul of we the people. Our intention is to gather around the Heart to heal the Land, and provide us with the Security that comes from respecting the individual in the context of community.

More specifically …

Heart represents our universal spiritual foundation, the vast and untapped resource of love and connection.

Land represents a restorative, sustainable economy that empowers a mutually beneficial partnership between human and biosphere.

Security represents our evolution from the single cell “every-cell-for-itself” philosophy to the multi-cell “we’re-all-in-this-together.” In doing so, we move from survival of the fittest to thrival of the fittingest, from mutually-assured destruction to mutually-insured survival.

May we wake up, and wise up.

The evolution has begun!

A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you’re fast asleep
In dreams you lose your heartaches
Whatever you wish for, you keep
Have faith in your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come smiling through
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
the dream that you wish will come true

How to Stop the Spiritually Sick from Infecting You

June 9, 2010 by

Don’t get dragged down by the dark states of others. Hoping to help someone — who loves to be negative — see the harm of being identified with dark states, is like trying to teach a bat to appreciate sunlight, or a mud hen to preen in fresh clean waters.

How to Stop the Spiritually Sick from Infecting You

Those with whom we assemble we will soon resemble, so the simple old saying goes. Yet it tells of a deep truth. It says that who we are — the stuff of our soul at present — is being transformed continuously by the nature of the company we keep; so that, in our essence we are always moving and evolving towards a kind of psychic oneness with whatever relationships we have revolving around us that we are within.

This company we keep refers both to the kinds of people outside of us and the presence of accompanying thoughts and feelings circulating within us. To see the truth of this spiritual law — and how it works in scale upon us, shaping our soul’s possibilities — just imagine how a cold piece of iron or damp wood soon assumes the nature of the fire it is brought next to. Radiant energy is transferred from one to the other, and soon what has no luminous properties of its own is transformed and begins to glow. With all this in mind, now consider there are four distinct types of people that can be identified by the four dark spirits inhabiting them. By recognizing these dark forces at work in others, we can learn to catch their dark works in ourselves. Once we have the Light to see what is so in us, we are on our way to being set free from the enslavement inherent in living in the dark of ourselves.

Those who aspire to the Light need to recognize these sick spirits and reject their poisonous expressions. Following is a list of four ways to stop sick spirits from infecting you. Your detection and rejection of them depends upon your awareness of their presence and your refusal to take part in the spiritual sickness they live to spread. These spiritual “darklings” must use human beings as their physical instruments, without which they have neither sound nor voice on earth.

1. The muckrakers: These negative spirits live to drag up old painful events and then revel in the anger, resentment, or bitterness that such unhappy memories must hold in the fabric of their cloth. Stay away from any spirit, in others or in yourself, that wants you to dive into some suffering over what happened in any yesterday. Never consent to stoop to resentment.

2. The dirt throwers: Certain low and malicious spirits pull themselves up by pulling others down. They love to gossip, criticize, judge, or denigrate anyone who ever had the misfortune of spending time with them. The only loyalty these denizens of the unconscious worlds have is to their own pain that they feed by involving everyone they can in their dirt throwing. Beware!

3. The mud dwellers: There is a group of mired spirits that thrive on low vibrations but that require a human instrument to play out their endless dark hungering. Easily recognizable, these unfortunate forces serve up dreadful mental pictures, or tell unsuitable sex jokes, for the sake of the unnatural reactions they produce. Ignore these messed-up spirits and they must take their mud-making elsewhere.

4. The life-haters: This group of sick spirits perpetuates their hold on the human soul by resisting almost every gift that life offers. They want us to listen to their complaints, agree with their envy, and accept as right their rejection of life when it doesn’t please them. These chronically conflicted spirits need us to join in their party or they can’t spread their poison!

This circle of sick spirits needs our lives to live. Without us they have no home. Our real inner work is to sweep clean the places in ourselves where such creatures reside. Remember: These evil entities have no entrance into our lives apart from where we have left the door open. And whatever has been left open in our unconsciousness can be closed consciously, if we so choose.

Begin today, this very moment, to withdraw any permission inadvertently granted these dark spirits to be in your life. Do not judge yourself, or those around you in whom any of these misdirected forces are active, but nevertheless come awake and refuse, actively, to spend one more moment of your life lending your precious force to their dark purposes.

The integral being

June 8, 2010 by

to the ordinary being, others often require tolerance.
to the highly evolved being, there is no such thing as tolerance,
because there is no such thing as other.
she has given up all ideas of individuality
and extended her goodwill without prejudice in every direction.
never hating, never resisting, never contesting,
she is simply always learning and being.

loving, hating, having expectations:
all these are attachments.
attachment prevents the growth of one’s true being.
therefore the integral being is attached to nothing
and can relate to everyone with an unstructured attitude.
because of this, her very existence benefits all things.

you see, that which has form
is equal to that which is without form,
and that which is alive
is equal to that which rests.
this is the subtle truth, not a religious intervention,
but only those who are highly evolved will understand this.

Closing Of The Cycle: The Last Days and What Is To Be Done

June 7, 2010 by

When we look at our world today in the middle of the year 2010, we see something that more and more resembles the beginning of Roland Emmerich’s 2012. Devastating earthquakes, floods, an unprecedented oil spill – the hemorrhaging of the Earth – and volcanoes. Besides the Iceland eruption, on May 29 it seems three other volcanoes went off: One in Guatemala, one in Ecuador and one in the area of the North Mariana islands. Note that the Mariana volcano – an underwater eruption – is very close to the deepest underwater trench in the world, the Mariana trench. Deep water volcano, Earth’s response to BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig that blew up just about the time the Iceland volcano first went off. Choreography courtesy the divine plan!

The human experiment – for it was never anything more than that – is now out of control. If the cycle is truly ending on 21 December 2012, and something is going to happen, then what is left to be done? No one yet has stepped forward to say, “game over!” So all that is left to be done is to change our consciousness.

As we see from the riots in Greece and Bangkok, not to mention the Israeli response to the effort to get aid to Gaza, while demonstrating the frustration of the people, as always, those who hold the power, the guns and the bombs, wield and often brutally maintain the power. Retreat to the inner realms and cultivate the highest consciousness. This is the essence of the message of the time.

This is a grand drama that is playing out now. What we are seeing is the exhaustion of materialism, what the Club of Rome defined in 1973 as the Limits of Growth. I was recently on an investigative visit to East Africa (Kenya) and South India. For a counterpoint to the misery that was everywhere evident, as I was traveling through different parts of these two countries, I took time to watch CNN, Al-Jazeera or BBC in the hotels so I could follow the oil spill and witness the European union voting a trillion dollar bail out for the Euro and some failing economies. It made me wonder: Where is the trillion dollars to give every human being on Earth a roof that doesn’t leak, an actual sanitary toilet, clean drinking water and real food on the table? No, it was quite evident that the species has failed in taking care of its own and in its capacity to save its environment. What people need to understand is that 21/12/2012 is actually humanity’s deadline, and right now it would rather send a man to Mars then deal head-on with what it has created on its home planet.

So the message of the time, it should be emphasized, is not just to change but to transform your consciousness into a supermental force. The route of material evolution is over. Now we can return to the mainstream of cosmic consciousness.

Consciousness and not life and form is the essential evolutionary principle of the cosmos. As the great Indian thinker Sri Aurobindo wrote concerning this premise: “In this vision of things the universe will reveal itself in its unity and totality as a manifestation of a single being, nature as its power of manifestation, evolution as its process of gradual manifestation in matter.”(“Supermind in Evolution”)

The power of the mind created the machine and the artificial time that governs our lives. Returned to itself, the power of the mind can ultimately heal all things. The power of a hundred thousand minds synchronized as a single planetary consciousness focused on a single point could alter the evolution of our mind and spirit irrevocably while providing us with the knowledge, insight and telepathic skills to turn our crisis into the second creation.

Such a supermental event of consciousness by 2012 is possible. It is the solution augured by the message of the time. We would then also know, that we are not alone. Cosmic civilization throughout the universe, we will find out, had been waiting for us to come upon this solution. We will hear the cry resounding across the Earth: “Welcome Home!” And we will know: Yes, we are home. A new time and a new day will dawn.

Good Risk, Bad Risk?

June 6, 2010 by

In this post I want to speak with you about the importance of risk taking and share with you an important strategic weapon called the “Minimax Analysis.”

The “Minimax Analysis” is a strategy in decision theory concerned with minimizing the biggest possible loss while maximizing the potential gain of any given situation or risk.

How it works is a simple, yet counter-intuitive process for you to use.  When you are presented with a decision to take a risk, what you do is engage in a “worst-case scenario” analysis.

There are a few steps involved…

Step 1. Identify and analyze the worst-case scenario as it relates to the risk.  A good example might be starting your own business.  The worst-case scenario is that you fail and lose all of your money!

Step 2. If the worst-case outcome is unacceptable, then immediately walk way as this is an unintelligent risk. This will save you a lot of time, money, and potential embarrassment. You must remember that every risk has an upside and downside scenario, and in this case of starting a business, you may have a lower tolerance for risk than others.

Step 3. If you find that the worst-case scenario is something that you can live with, then congratulations as you have quickly identified and accepted the worst-possible outcome.  Now get to work on minimizing thepotential downside. One of the first things you can do is to begin your business plan and research everything associated with the starting of a business to include financial commitments and family sacrifices.

Step 4. The fourth and final step is all about maximizing the upside positive outcome.  Identify all appropriate actions that can and will take to tip the scales in your favor. This is intelligent risk taking in action.

From here on out the rest is pure gravy.

Now that you are armed with this knowledge, you must remain acutely aware that the risks you’ve taken in the past define your life and reality as it is today, AND the risks you take today will define your life and reality as you would ideally like it to be tomorrow.

TOMORROW, I am going to share with you a special opportunity which contains a small risk and a MAJOR upside potential.  Keep an eye out as we have worked over ten years on this project!  Until then, focus on developing a tolerance along with a healthy appetite for intelligent risk taking.

Everything Counts!
