On the 22nd of this month, we enter the Autumnal equinox here in the Northern Hemisphere. Astrologically speaking, this is the time when the sun enters the second of the Venus ruled signs, that of Libra. As you view the glyph or symbol of this sign, it is obvious that it represents the scales of balance.
We see two sides represented, as well as the fulcrum point, the midsection. Hence, this sign has the ability to see both sides of a situation, two sides to any perspective or viewpoint. It can be a distinctly objective sign, acting as the mediator to assist others in settling disputes.
There are pluses and minuses to being able to sit in this chair. All sides are apparent. All points of view are able to be considered. The challenge lies in moving off the dime, the middle of the road, and making a decision.
Whatever decision is made, it has to be one that you can live with. Consequently, Libra is at times accused of being indecisive. However, in the Libra way of looking at things, once that decision is made, there’s generally no turning back.
The die is cast. So every decision that is made is done so with intention and the acute awareness of the impact of options on the table.
Being at the midsection, this sign is also associated with the middle portion of the body. It rules the kidneys which see to it that the proper balance of certain chemicals in the body are distributed.
Being ruled by Venus, Libra tends to like things that are tasteful, pretty, appealing to the senses. In keeping with this sign’s capacity to act as the consummate diplomat or mediator, it is charming, considerate, compliant, and willing to compromise. They would rather find a happy medium and maintain a relationship, than go it alone.
People with planets in this sign are comfortable in careers involving contracts, such as the field of law and because of Venus’s influence, they can also lean toward careers that appeal to the senses, such acting, style or fashion, decorating, the floral industry, furniture, fine arts and jewelry. Since they excel in mediation, they make good attorneys and counselors. They also enjoy anything that brings people together and creates harmony, so weddings have appeal to them as well.
Although this sign prefers harmony, there is such a thing as “going to war to achieve peace”, so don’t be surprised if you see the other end of the pacifist pendulum coming into play with this sign. They do believe in fighting for justice.
Venus rules Libra.
Saturn is exalted in Libra. It is often said that the wheels of justice move slowly and Saturn, Father Time, takes his time meting out justice.
Mars has its detriment in Libra because the job of Mars is to compete and take swift action. Since Libra is more prone to weigh and balancing before making a decision, this does not serve Mars, the warrior well. After all, when you’re on the battlefield, do you really want to look your enemy straight in the eye before taking aim and decide whether or not to shoot, when your enemy may be less indecisive and pull their trigger first? Mars prefers to shoot first and ask questions later.
Owing to its high spirited nature, the Sun thrives in fire signs over air signs and therefore finds its fall in Libra.
