Hilary Adams' interest in calligraphy developed by chance rather than design. She has always loved letters and an appreciation for fine handwriting led to a more critical appraisal of the different styles of writing. However, her initial foray into the world of calligraphy was inspired by the desire to create florid illuminated borders and decorated letters! The writing was at that stage of secondary importance. Initially self-taught, Hilary started out by making gifts of written quotes, verse and cards for family and friends and was rather surprised when small paying commissions started coming her way. She abandoned her "safe" job at a Johannesburg bank and has freelanced ever since. On moving to Cape Town in 1990 she signed up for her first formal calligraphy course at the Ruth Prowse School of Art under the direction of leading Cape Calligrapher, Linda Sealy.Since that time Hilary has been fortunate enough to attend workshops conducted in Cape Town and Johannesburg by visiting calligraphers such as Ewan Clayton, Brody Neuenschwander, Margaret Daubney, Peter Thornton, Carol Pallisen and most recently Katharina Pieper. During the last five years she has also developed her computer design skills and now offers the combined services of both DTP and calligraphy.
