Buddhism & Meditation for Children - Rameshori Buddhist Center, Atlanta, GA

Rameshori Buddhist Center of Atlanta, Georgia is a part of the New Kadampa Tradition of Buddhism, a classic, living tradition of Kadampa (Mahayana) Buddhism which has been re-presented by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso specifically for the West. We offer meditation classes and practical Buddhist methods for improving the quality of our daily lives and gaining inner peace. The Family Time classes begin with a very short meditation/visualization, then there is a brief teaching designed to help the kids lead healthy, positive lives. The teachings utilize both traditional Buddhist stories and meditations, such as the life story of a particular Buddha or a meditation on giving, as well as well-known Western fairy tales, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Teacher and Kadampa Buddhist nun, Ani Namkhyen, is the mother of a delightful seven year old boy, and is very skillful at offering children stories and examples relevant to their own lives.

Children's Anapana Meditation

Vipassana, which means "to see things as they really are", is a logical process of mental purification through self-observation. The ideal time to begin the first steps of this mental training is in childhood when children as young as eight years old can easily learn the technique of Anapana meditation. Anapana is the first step in the practice of Vipassana meditation. It is the observation of natural respiration, as it comes in and as it goes out. Anapana is a simple technique that helps develop concentration of the mind. Besides helping them calm and concentrate their minds, Anapana helps children to better understand themselves and how their minds work. They develop an inner strength that helps them to choose right and appropriate actions over wrong actions. For this reason Anapana provides them with a tool to deal with fears, anxieties, and pressures of childhood and adolescence. Learning Anapana plants a wholesome interest in self-introspection and meditation, which may open an entirely new dimension of life for them later on as well as providing them with a tool that will be of immense value to them for the rest of their lives. Children's courses are one-day courses open to all children aged 8-12yrs who wish to learn to meditate. Teenager's courses may range in length from one to three days and are open to children aged 13-16yrs. Parents/guardians do not have to be meditators. These courses have been specifically designed for children and the schedule and activities crafted to embrace the dynamics of the particular age group.

Learning Meditation - Childrens' Meditations

I have tried all the exercises I recommend here. As I became totally involved with them I was reminded that there is a child in all of us and we are never too old to learn from that child like perspective. I hope you will join your child. Talk and laugh about what you experience. I dream that these simple meditations will in many cases replace "time-outs" and that children will learn the life-long lesson that meditation is an acceptable activity. That it can be done anywhere, anytime-it's always available. Serenity is inside all of us. I am so excited to be offering this time and space to children. I believe that daily visits to this site will be a gift not only to the children who use it, but, as a result of their visits, a gift to the world(at least their parents will think so). If we guide young people to look to themselves as their own source of calm, peace and self-esteem they will ultimately be better prepared for all that life is.

Loving Kindness Meditation for Children with Gregory Kramer

The practice of Loving-kindness, or metta, can be done in one of two ways: Either intensive prolonged meditation to develop deep states of concentration, or in daily life at any time one meets with people and animals or thinks about them. The systematic practice of loving-kindness for deep concentration as it is practiced in various meditation centres has been presented in BuddhaNet in the Loving-kindness Meditation or Metta Bhavana section by Venerable Sujiva. To learn about the radiating of metta to all beings with children, we have to tap into the store of knowledge accumulated by lay people and parents. It must be knowledge which has grown out of years of living and loving with children and young adults. Gregory Kramer, father of three boys, shows us what subtle but precise adjustments in the standard practice of loving-kindness he was able to anchor in the lives of his children.
