Homeschooling - Learning Freedom
Karl M. Bunday, the author of this invaluable site, isn't too fond of state-funded schools and it shows. He's a keen proselytizer for home schooling and has compiled an impressive range of arguments in support of it here. He claims that more than one million children are taught at home in the US, and more globally, and he's out to up that number with internal and external links to home school resources of all kinds, information on how to get started, and practical advice on finding teaching materials. For good measure, he throws in comments from Nobel prize winners who hated school (including Albert Einstein, George Bernard Shaw, and Bertrand Russell), considerable opinion about the problem of age socialization due to age segregation in schools, reading instructions, books on home schooling, bibliographies on education issues, resource guides, and a guide to education-related newsgroups. Overall, this is an invaluable - if opinionated - compendium of encouragement and ammunition. The viewpoints, links, and information are all on the home schooling side of the argument. Of course, there's a case to be made for the other side, but this isn't that place.

Heather's Homeschooling
In our lives as homeschoolers, the home-ed mailing list has been a constant source of inspiration and support. I've been active on the home-ed list since early 1993. I've collected some of my favorite posts to the home-ed list here. These posts cover a lot of territory - from anecdotes about our homeschooling experiences to basic educational philosophy to approaches to individual topics of study. I've tried to categorize the posts, but, like learning itself, some of them fall neatly into categories and others don't.

Homeschooling - I have a bright child and I don't want them to be bored. Where do I start?
The bottom line: if your son or daughter is intellectually gifted, you needn't try to piece together a more challenging program. Our programs provide ready-made academic challenges for advanced students, yet are also used successfully by average students and even those with learning disabilities.
Sonlight Curriculum® follows a modest pace in its standard early elementary programs. But if your child is chomping at the bit to set a faster pace, Sonlight® will give all the challenge your child requires. Simply substitute one of the Advanced Readers programs for the Regular Readers programs. By the time you hit Core 3, Sonlight's pace has quickened noticeably, and in Core 4 and beyond we provide more than enough materials and outside assignments to challenge even the brightest students. Thus, for example, the content of the 7th Year program is easy enough for a 5th grader to understand, but the unmodified workload is worthy of a high school-level course in American History.

Homeschooling 101: Why We Do It
This month's Changing Face of America focuses on one aspect of how education has changed in the past fifteen years. In a three-part series, All Things Considered examines homeschooling. We begin by talking with three families across the country to find out how they homeschool. The families have written about their philosophy of home-based education and we've asked them to share Web links that have helped them in the education of their children.
