Suicide and Bullying
Bullying and suicide Suicide statistics, child suicide, teen suicide, youth suicide, suicide help, suicide prevention - Britain has one of the highest suicide rates in Europe. Each year in the UK over 5000 people take their life. The Samaritans estimate that in the UK there is a suicide every 82 minutes. The charity Depression Alliance estimates that each year there are around 19,000 suicide attempts by UK adolescents whilst more than 2 million children attend GP's surgeries with some kind of psychological or emotional problem. Each day, two people under the age of 24 commit suicide. In 1997, 1757 young adult males committed suicide whilst only 412 females committed suicide. One reason is thought to be because males choose more lethal (and thus successful) methods of suicide such as hanging, shooting or jumping in front of a train. In the UK, suicide has taken over from road accidents as the number one cause of death for young adult males in the age range 18-24. Bullying, harassment and abuse cause injury to health, which is often diagnosed as stress and anxiety but may also include depression. The page injury to health tells you how negative stress injures your health, including the sequence of events that precedes suicide. Prolonged negative stress can culminate in a cocktail of symptoms often congruent with the diagnostic criteria for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD; these include anxiety, anger, reactive depression, tearfulness, disbelief, panic attacks, fatigue, sleeplessness, migraines, joint and muscle pains, excessive guilt, suicidal thoughts, loss of self-esteem and self confidence. The Options Institute - Overcoming Depression Information and Symptom Checklist
Our work originally began when our son, Raun, was diagnosed as profoundly autistic and severely retarded. In an effort to help him, we developed a totally unique, ground breaking program that enabled our son to make a complete recovery from his supposedly "incurable" condition. Since then, The Option Institute has evolved into a highly-acclaimed learning center serving thousands of people and hundreds of families from 80 countries around the world. The Option Institute and Fellowship is a nonprofit organization we founded in 1983 in response to folks asking for our help. Our 95 acre mountainside campus is located in Sheffield, Massachusetts (in the Northeast part of the United States. We offer a series of intensive personal growth programs for individuals, couples, families and groups who are either challenged by adversity or who want to improve the quality of their lives by becoming happier, more effective and more successful. The basis for the ideas presented in these programs are explored in my best-selling book Happiness Is A Choice. We also offer The Son-Rise Program, which is a unique way of working with developmentally challenged children and adults. It's based on the methods we used to help transform our son from an autistic, functionally retarded little boy into a high honors graduate of an Ivy League University.
The Psychology of Cyberspace - Computer and Internet Addiction
A heated debate is rising among psychologists. With the explosion of excitement about the internet, some people seem to be a bit too excited. Some people spend way too much time there. Is this yet ANOTHER type of addiction that has invaded the human psyche? Psychologists are not even sure yet what to call this phenomenon. Some label it an "Internet Addiction Disorder." But many people are addicted to their computers long before the internet enters their lives. Some people are extremely attached to their computer and don't even care about the internet. Perhaps we should call the phenomenon a "Computer Addiction." Also, let's not forget the very powerful, but now seemingly mundane and almost accepted addiction that some people develop to video games. Video games are computers too... very single-minded computers, but computers nevertheless. visit us to find out more!

Suicide Awareness Voices of Education
SAVE was started in 1989 when six suicide survivors (people who have experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide) met and agreed on the need for an organization. The organization is comprised mostly of suicide survivors, and people that have suffered from depression. The major event for the organization is SAVE’s Suicide Awareness and Memorial Day held every spring in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which draws nearly 500 people annually. The #1 cause of suicide is untreated depression. SAVE is committed to the education of the general public about the depressive brain diseases (such as clinical depression and bipolar illness) that can result in suicide if left untreated medically and psychologically. By educating the general public about such brain diseases, SAVE strives to remove the stigma associated with these diseases. SAVE’s prevention and education programs are designed to: Increase knowledge about depression and suicide prevention. Increase knowledge about symptoms of depression and the warning signs of suicidal thinking and behavior. Increase the confidence and competence of participants to make interventions and referrals. Increase understanding and the use of intervention skills that can help avert the tragedy of suicide. Increase knowledge about community resources, how to access and use them.
