The Psychology of Cyberspace - Computer and Internet Addiction
A heated debate is rising among psychologists. With the explosion of excitement about the internet, some people seem to be a bit too excited. Some people spend way too much time there. Is this yet ANOTHER type of addiction that has invaded the human psyche? Psychologists are not even sure yet what to call this phenomenon. Some label it an "Internet Addiction Disorder." But many people are addicted to their computers long before the internet enters their lives. Some people are extremely attached to their computer and don't even care about the internet. Perhaps we should call the phenomenon a "Computer Addiction." Also, let's not forget the very powerful, but now seemingly mundane and almost accepted addiction that some people develop to video games. Video games are computers too... very single-minded computers, but computers nevertheless. visit us to find out more!

Suicide Awareness Voices of Education
SAVE was started in 1989 when six suicide survivors (people who have experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide) met and agreed on the need for an organization. The organization is comprised mostly of suicide survivors, and people that have suffered from depression. The major event for the organization is SAVE’s Suicide Awareness and Memorial Day held every spring in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which draws nearly 500 people annually. The #1 cause of suicide is untreated depression. SAVE is committed to the education of the general public about the depressive brain diseases (such as clinical depression and bipolar illness) that can result in suicide if left untreated medically and psychologically. By educating the general public about such brain diseases, SAVE strives to remove the stigma associated with these diseases. SAVE’s prevention and education programs are designed to: Increase knowledge about depression and suicide prevention. Increase knowledge about symptoms of depression and the warning signs of suicidal thinking and behavior. Increase the confidence and competence of participants to make interventions and referrals. Increase understanding and the use of intervention skills that can help avert the tragedy of suicide. Increase knowledge about community resources, how to access and use them.

Suicide in the aboriginal community is a major issue, as addressed in the report entitled, "Acting on What We Know: Preventing Youth Suicide in First Nations-The Report of the Advisory Group on Suicide Prevention" (released in 2003). Suicide among First Nations youth has been occurring at an alarming rate in recent years. Statistics show an Aboriginal suicide rate two to three times higher than the non-Aboriginal rate for Canada, and within the youth age group, the Aboriginal suicide rate is estimated to be five to six times higher than that of non-Aboriginal youth. The goal of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research -Institute of Aboriginal Peoples' Health (CIHR-IAPH) is to lead a national advanced research agenda in the area of Aboriginal health, and to promote innovative research in this field that improves the health of Aboriginal peoples living in Canada. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research - Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (CIHR-INMHA) will support research to enhance mental health, neurological health, vision, hearing, and cognitive functioning and to reduce the burden of related disorders through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, treatment, support systems, and palliation. Antidepressant Alternative - Help Beat Teen and Child Depression
Many doctors and psychiatrists prescribe
synthetic anti-depressants for children
with depression or other developmental
disorders. While these medications
certainly do have their place, it is my
experience that they are significantly
over prescribed, without first
investigating more natural and equally
effective alternatives. Because of the
increasing demand for a safe, natural
herbal treatment for children with
depression, anxiety, OCD, or those with
Autism and related disorders, Native
Remedies has developed
MindSoothe Jr.
Using the same highly successful formula
as
MindSoothe (adult version),

and Passiflora in child-friendly dosage.

Asperger's Syndrome Medication for Symptoms of Child/Adult Disorder
Offering natural remedies for Asperger's
Syndrome,
information, and help from a
practicing Clinical Psychologist. Herbal
and homeopathic remedies can be
viable
alternatives to the synthetic drugs
and may be just as effective, with far
fewer risks and side effects. Asperger's
Syndrome was first identified in 1944,
but was only officially recognized as a
diagnostic category in the DSM IV in
1994. As a result, many children were
misdiagnosed over the years as ADD/HD,
Autistic, OCD or even schizophrenic.
Many different terms are currently
applied, leading to great confusion on
the part of parents and educators.
Asperger's Syndrome may also be referred
to as High Functioning Autism (HFA),
Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD),
Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not
Otherwise Specified (PDD - NOS),
Atypical PDD or even Nonverbal Learning
Disability (NLD). While there is no
specific treatment or 'cure' for
Asperger's Syndrome, there are
many
interventions which can significantly
improve the functioning and quality of
life of people and children with
Asperger's.
