On the 22nd of this month, the sun makes its annual trek into the second Mercury ruled sign, that of Virgo. The last of the first six signs, this mutable earth sign is often referred to as the perfectionist of the zodiac. Why is this, you ask?
The sign which follows is Libra, and that is the sign that begins the portion of the zodiac associated with our relationships with others. But before we can enter into that segment of our lives, it is important that we be sure we are putting our best foot forward. Have we ironed out as many of our own personal kinks as possible?
Have we refined our own being to the point where we are as complete as we can possibly be on our own? Are we presenting the purest form of our selves to the outside world? These are the challenges for Virgo.
It is the job of Virgo to edit and fine tune, to eliminate the flaws in the system and to find the most efficient means of utilizing our talents. This is the sign that is born to serve, to be of help.
Being ruled by Mercury, this is an intellectual sign. It is analytical and relishes facts and information. It thrives on data and is often a seemingly endless fount of knowledge. When a Virgo knows something, they know it in depth, like the back of their hand. If they do a job, they believe in doing it right or not doing it at all.
They like orderliness and are often said to be neat freaks. The Virgos who don’t necessarily fall under this neat freak category may instead have their own sense of order. If their home or office appears to be a mess, there is probably a sense of order in their minds, such that they can put their fingers on the very item that appears lost in the obvious pile of stuff.
Because of their attention to detail, they make excellent editors, teachers, technicians and health care providers. After all, if someone is caring for your health, you want to be sure that person doesn’t miss something critical, like the proper dose of medication or the proper order in which to provide treatment. This sign has tremendous respect for hygiene, following with the notion of keeping things clean, pure and orderly.

And speaking of something “critical”, it is the nature of this sign to be critical. They can easily find fault and can let their awareness of the flaws in life overtake their appreciation of the goodies life has to offer.
They can be intolerant of the imperfections of self or others, expecting life to be perfect and therefore finding disappointment when they realize something is not exactly to their liking. They can be very hard on themselves, expecting their own performance to be perfect and tolerating nothing less–this is how understanding a Virgo is important.
On a physical level, Virgo is associated with the digestive system and specifically the process of breaking down food into its finer elements, so that the food can assimilate into and nurture the body. It’s not unusual for natives of this sign to possess very sensitive digestive systems, so they are very particular about what they eat and how they eat it. To some they may appear fanatical in their quest of purity. But Virgos often find out through trial and error just what their systems can tolerate.
This sign is also noted for having an affinity for small animals, such as house pets. They will dote over them and take excellent care. And they can also make for good gardeners, applying their detailed knowledge to a process that efficiently grows the nutrients for the system, or using their encyclopedic mind to recall amazing details about various species of plants.
Don’t be surprised if someone is a Virgo or has strong Virgo influences in their chart, to be precision oriented in whatever they do, and that often includes working on time, according to schedule and being on time.
Mercury rules Virgo.
Mercury is also considered to be exalted in Virgo.
Jupiter, in some schools of thought, is considered to have its detriment in Virgo and Neptune also has its detriment in Virgo. Jupiter is more comfortable with the bigger picture rather than the smaller, and Neptune’s job is to see the more etheric side of life and less of the finer details.
Venus has its fall in Virgo and it’s often the case that those born with Venus in this position seem to be very difficult to please.
