On Saturday, the 21st of December, we celebrate the Winter Solstice in the Northern hemisphere, as the sun enters the sign of Capricorn.
The tenth sign of the zodiac, Capricorn, is ruled by Saturn, symbolized by the mountain goat and is designated as Cardinal Earth.
As with all the signs, the creature that represents the sign, holds tremendous significance.
The goat scales the steps of the mountain and is most content towards the top or in high elevations. It is a hardy animal, enduring what some might consider difficult conditions.
Part of the symbolism of this sign is the climb that this creature makes and the inherent time involved in this venture, not to mention the discipline to endure it.
Wisdom is gained as a result of one’s experience. And in this rarified environment, few species are able to survive. Hence, it tends to get lonely at the top. The goat is lauded for its ambition to scale the heights.
As a reflection of the life of the goat, the nature of this sign is to be disciplined, goal oriented, ambitious, grounded, practical and comfortable associating with others in high places.
It is comfortable in environments that are structured, where the rules are clearly laid out. Seriousness is part of the nature of this sign, as well as wisdom and maturity.
This is not to imply that Capricorn has no sense of humor. Quite the contrary. However, this sign does take their responsibilities seriously and are therefore very reliable and dependable.
Understanding a Capricorn
The Cancer/Capricorn axis in the chart is representative of the maternal/paternal figureheads. Capricorn takes ownership of the role of the father, the parent that traditionally doles out the rules of the game, the discipline, and often times the punishment.
As some children may recall back in the day, it was not unusual to hear the warning from their mothers, “wait until your father gets home.”
At times, this sign can appear somewhat cold or distant. This is part of their business-like, get it done approach. They are focused on scaling those heights, and when their goal is clearly in front of them, little deters them from accomplishing their goals.
It is therefore hard working and sober in nature. It can be comfortable in what might appear to others as a sparse or cold environment.
In the physical body, Capricorn is associated with the knees, the bones, the joints, the gall bladder and the skin. Ironically, as much as this is a disciplined sign, the bend in the knees is what enables a body to be mobile, hence the lesson of learning flexibility in the face of structure. The ability to survive in sometimes stark environments builds character and a thick skin.
Ruled by Saturn, this sign is no stranger to rules and working within the confines and restraints of time. And because of the comfort level with structure, can be effective in big business or government.
Although understanding a Capricorn, he can come across a bit crusty, there is still a very sensitive being lurking under the surface of this protective covering.
The planet of Mars is exalted in this sign, as it utilizes the structure and discipline to be productive and competitive. The Moon finds her detriment here, as the nurturing and empathy she craves are not as readily available. Jupiter finds its fall in this sign, since this planet is intent on expanding and taking risks, whereas Capricorn is more associated with a sense of structure and limits.
