Until people experience a new awareness, they are often uncomfortable with the concept of "spirituality". It is often confused with religion. The difference between the two is that religion focuses outside of oneself. Spirituality focuses inward.

What is Spiritual Counseling? ....

The National Board of Certified Counselors defines counseling as "The application of mental health, psychological, or human development principles, through cognitive, affective, behavioral or systemic intervention strategies, that address wellness, personal growth, or career development, as well as pathology."

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines counsel as, "1. The act of exchanging opinions and ideas; consultation. 2. Advice or guidance, especially as solicited from a knowledgeable person. See synonyms at advice. 3. A plan of action."

Spiritual counseling is counseling that facilitates growing awareness of a higher level of consciousness. A higher level of consciousness brings an expanded view of reality. The more your view of reality expands, the more you are able to integrate conflicting issues within yourself.

Spiritual counseling lies somewhere between these two definitions. It is a bit more than just giving spiritual advice, but a bit less than the form of counseling practiced by the National Board of Certified Counselors. This difference is primarily determined by who gives the counsel, and in the type of advice they are giving.

The American Association of Pastoral Counselors defines pastoral counseling as "a unique form of psychotherapy which uses spiritual resources as well as psychological understanding for healing and growth. It is provided by certified pastoral counselors, who are not only mental health professionals but who have also had in-depth religious and/or theological training.

Spiritual counseling is intended as a way to help healthy individuals solve or cope with problems as part of everyday living. It is not intended to cure addictions, deal with post traumatic stress, or treat mental illnesses.

Spiritual counseling assists spiritual seekers in a variety of ways including Grieving; dealing with the loss of a loved one, developing a deeper understanding of the spiritual realm, releasing of emotional blocks that hinder spiritual growth, and expanding your philosophies in the diversified teachings of religion.

Does Spiritual Counseling Conflict With Other Spiritual Teachings?

Many of the traditional religious teachings practiced today offer a venue by which an individual can receive spiritual counseling. A priest, a rabbi or minister may be able to provide guidance and nourishment with issues that pertain to spirituality.

However, in times when there may be an internal conflict that violates the teachings of a specific religious teaching, private spiritual counseling may offer an individual the opportunity to view a life circumstance from an inner-spiritual point of view.

Spiritual counseling gears individuals to discover their individualized spiritual truth by relying in the spirit within for guidance.

Spiritual coaching is geared to encourage individuals to learn how to rely on the divine presence of the spirit within to recreate their lives into a life that is reflective of happiness and spiritual awareness. Students are introduced to spiritual tools and exercises that set into motion the re-shifting of negative thoughts and beliefs in order to make room for the replanting of positive thoughts that are in concert with our divine nature.

Some of the world's most beloved spiritual masters developed their spiritual awareness through self-exploration. Today, the interest in the realms of spirituality and metaphysics has created a desire for individuals to expand their knowledge in the spiritual realm to include educational preparation as well as wisdom and experience through inner-exploration.

The most important qualification to look for in a spiritual advisor is to find one that honors your individualized divine status. Spiritual counseling should not promote guilt, fear or unworthiness. Rather, it should offer you the opportunity to unveil your divine nature as a spiritual being that is composed of Love.

Is spiritual counseling - spiritual guidance?

Spiritual counseling (also known as spiritual guidance, spiritual friendship, spiritual direction) is the ongoing relationship between a spiritual guide and a seeker whose primary focus is on his/her own spiritual growth. In spiritual counseling, the central relationship is not between the seeker and the guide but between the seeker and God. Spiritual direction is the process that helps us recognize God's direction in our lives and teaches us to be attentive to the patterns, the insights and the callings. In Hebrew the term, "moreh derech" or "morah derech" literally means the "teacher of the way".

The competent guide will be a companion and a mentor to the person who is seeking a greater understanding of his/her relationship with God as it is reflected and challenged by all aspects of that person's life. The classic question in spiritual practice is "Where is God in the midst of this experience?"


Who comes to spiritual counseling?


People come to spiritual counseling because they yearn for God. They have an inner longing and hunger for a relationship with God in their lives. They want to know the meaning of their life and enhance their sense of discernment so they can better understand their spiritual map and journey. The companion/counselor walks with you through life's roadways. Spiritual direction is not easy. Most seekers have a crisis of the spirit and feel something missing that they can't initially identify. Spiritual counseling opens them to finding God's presence in the present.

Still, spiritual counseling goes beyond the ordinary spiritual guidance given by a priest. Although it may be difficult to know the difference between when a counselor is advising someone, or counseling them, the difference should be clear enough. Priests give spiritual guidance everyday. Worshipers naturally approach priests with questions of a spiritual nature and expect some form of opinion in return.

This is not necessarily counseling, although it may be considered such by some definitions. What makes spiritual counseling different from ordinary spiritual guidance are at least four factors:

1) It is ongoing, at least for a few weeks in regularly scheduled sessions.

2) The priest and worshiper map out a clear plan of action for dealing with the problem. 3) This plan of action involves at least one form of commonly accepted therapy.

4) The worshiper's problem has been caused by some event such as a death in the family, and is not just a matter of wanting to improve his or herself.

Spiritual counseling is not just a matter of a one time sit down and talk with a worshiper, it is ongoing as it is intended for serious problems, and not just a wish of the worshiper to improve his or herself. It therefore requires that a plan of action to combat the problem in the worshiper's life be mapped out, and some form of accepted therapy be in action on the priest's part. Spiritual counseling requires a certain amount of dedication and attention be given by the priest to the worshiper they would normally not give to any one individual.

This does not necessarily mean the need for the professional indifference and objectivity of the certified therapist. It does mean that the priest must play the role of the objective friend that is always there to help deal with the problems of life during one or two sessions a week. Spiritual counseling differs from professional counseling in part, where the boundaries of involvement are drawn.

While a priest should never become sexually or romantically involved with a worshiper, feelings of friendship should never be seen as out of place. At the same time the priest must be careful not to allow their own feelings to interfere with helping the worshiper to heal.

It is perfectly okay, for example, to express sympathy to a worshiper that you are called in to counsel for grief, even to offer a hug. It is not okay to break down crying in a session yourself over a worshiper's loss. Too, while friendship is not forbidden between counselor priest and counselee worshiper, never should the priest cross the boundary of abusing trust and using their power over the worshiper for personal gain, whether emotional or otherwise.

TRUST

A person who needs to learn the lesson of TRUST will experience a distrust of others. If we are unable to trust, we will erroneously interpret the words and actions of others. A distrustful person will create unpleasant or painful situations until they become aware of the issue of trust.

Trust allows you to call forth your negativities in order to heal them. It allows you to release fear.

What is wrong with being dependent upon the Source of All that IS!!?? Let go and TRUST!! You are never alone. You will be guided. Trust the Universe, Trust Spirit, TRUST THE SOURCE!

Gary Zukav says, "Trusting means that the circumstance that you are in is working toward your best and most appropriate end. There is no WHEN to that. There is no IF to that. It just IS".

We must not forget our GRATITUDE! Being thankful for everything in our lives allows Spirit to bring us more of what we want.

"Be careful what you ask for" is an old saying that has tremendous truth to it. You may notice that today we manifest faster than ever. Then, when you have your DNA reactivated your manifestations will be so fast you no longer have the luxury of negative thinking. You will manifest the negative as fast as the positive thoughts.

It is important to state your gratitude to your Source at least once a day. Staying in the positive, state each area of your life as currently whole and healthy.

Example: "Mother, Father, God, Goddess, Supreme Source of All, I thank you for my perfect health, my positive thinking, my loving and supportive family and friends, my magnificent home, my comfortable and reliable transportation, my healthy and delicious food, my free flowing abundance and career opportunities, and my spiritual connection to you, the Source of All That IS."
